For too long, doctors and women have spoken about the risks of prescribing HRT but it is actually often more relevant and important to consider the risks of not taking HRT. Dr Louise Newson will be talking about how the hormones oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone work in the body, organs and cells. She will be discussing the risks of not taking HRT for menopause – ranging from experiencing symptoms to health risks. This is important to consider as globally and in the UK the majority of menopausal women are not prescribed HRT.
Louise Newson is a physician, menopause specialist and a member of the UK Government’s Menopause Taskforce. She is passionate about increasing awareness and knowledge of the perimenopause and menopause.
Described as the ‘medic who kickstarted the menopause revolution’, she is the founder of the free award-winning balance menopause support app and the balance-menopause website. She hosts the Dr Louise Newson podcast and is a Sunday Times bestseller author. Her main research interest is the role of female hormones in reducing biological ageing.
For generations, the menopause conversation (if discussed at all) has been framed in terms of vasomotor symptoms. But while an estimated 70% of menopausal women will experience hot flushes, the physical impact of menopause extends far beyond vasomotor symptoms. Hormone receptors are present throughout a woman’s body, so when levels of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone fluctuate and fall during the perimenopause and menopause, this often triggers a whole host of symptoms.
In this webinar, GP and Menopause Specialist Dr Rebecca Lewis discusses:
Rebecca qualified from Guy’s Medical School and initially pursued a career in anaesthetics, gaining FRCA in 1996. She then changed speciality to General Practice (MRCGP 2000). During her time in general practice, she became interested in the menopause and how dramatically it can affect all aspects of women’s health and their quality of life.
She found this the most rewarding area of medicine to be involved in, as once women are correctly diagnosed, their symptoms managed and treated effectively, their lives can be transformed, and needless suffering stopped. As a result, she is now passionate about improving education and knowledge about the menopause, not only within medicine but in the workplace and society as a whole. Her aim is to make menopause a positive experience not one hampered by debilitating symptoms, allowing women to get on and enjoy healthy, active lives for many years ahead.
Rebecca now works solely within the menopause speciality and dedicates her time to seeing patients, lecturing and writing articles which aim to empower women with evidence-based knowledge so that they can make informed decisions about managing their menopause.
She works closely with Dr Louise Newson and co-founded Newson Clinic in 2018. She is also a director of the free balance app.
